LEGENDS OF AMBER

Symbolism of Amber is great. In ancient Greece, there was a legend about Phaethon, who dared to travel through the sky on a golden chariot that no one could handle, not even Zeus. Phaethon did not have the strength to handle the chariot, and he fell to the ground and died. His mother Clymene searched for her son for a long time, found his grave, and mourned him for a very long time. And then she died; she turned into a poplar tree, but she kept crying. This is how the resin drops fell into the river, hardened, and turned into amber.

The Baltic legend of the Gauja bird links the origin of amber with a crime that a cruel king of a foreign country incited his faithful servant to commit. According to the legend, the bird of Gauja kept a necklace of extraordinary beauty made of the golden stone in its nest. The king wanted to possess this unusual piece of jewelry, so he sent his servant to take the necklace away from the bird. And so it happened. The servant, returning to the king by sea, decided to look at the necklace. At that time, the bird Gauja flew by, grabbed the servant, and threw him into the water. The necklace was scattered into small pieces, which, once in the water, sprouted and formed a huge underwater forest. The underwater trees wept tears that turned into amber and were brought to the shore.

In Sophocles' tragedy, the amber is the tears over the dead hero Meleager, who was the victim of his mother's curse.

The Russian people have a parable about a singing stone, whose song can be heard only by a man with a pure heart.

In a Lithuanian legend, the goddess of the sea sheds amber mourning tears for her lover. In the palace of the sea lived the beautiful goddess Jurate. On the shore of that sea lived and fished Castithys, singing songs and casting nets into the sea. The goddess sent mermaids to the fisherman who ordered him not to cast any more nets, but Castithys did not listen. Then Yurate herself swam to the surface to look at the fisherman who disobeyed her orders. But the goddess fell in love with the fisherman and took him to the bottom of the sea. The mighty Perkunas learned of this, became angry, and killed Castithys with a stroke of lightning, while they chained the goddess in golden chains and left her at the bottom. So year after year, unable to free herself, the goddess shed amber tears that were thrown ashore.

There is a legend that says that even before the advent of humans, there was not one Sun, but two. It was always day and summer. But one day, one Sun fell into the sea and split into small pieces, which became amber. Since that time, the day changed into the night, and the seasons changed.
