Tsavorite is a rare representative of the garnet family, namely a rich dark green garnet. Natural transparent emerald is one of the four precious gemstones and is a green type of beryl.

TSAVORITE VS EMERALD: COMPOSITION AND PRODUCTION/MINING

Emerald

Natural transparent emerald is one of the four precious gemstones and is a green type of beryl.

The hardness of emerald is 8 out of 10 on the Mohs scale. They are not as hard as diamonds, but they last a long time. They are easy to scratch, but you can erase these scratches. Also, during processing, an emerald can break easily, so it is not easy to work with these stones. Most emeralds often have cracks on their surface, so their strength or resistance to breakage is usually classified as low.

At present, the largest number of all emeralds are mined in Colombia. Emeralds also come from Austria, India, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Egypt, USA, Norway, and Pakistan. In the past few decades, an increasing number of emeralds have been found in Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Tanzania. Zambian deposits of emeralds are quite high: about 20% of the total number of these minerals are mined here.

Tsavorite

Tsavorite is a rare representative of the garnet family, namely a rich dark green garnet. It resembles an emerald but is less brilliant and stronger. It has 7 points on the hardness scale. This mineral contains silicon dioxide, and the presence of vanadium oxide and chrome are responsible for its green color.

From the moment of its appearance up to the present day, the main Tsavorite deposit is the territory of East Africa, to be more precise - Kenya and Tanzania. The fields are located in arid areas with no vegetation, so it is extremely difficult to extract them commercially. The second mining region is in the Tsavo district of southern Kenya. Many tsavorites in the world market are represented by stones from Kenya, most of them having a darker hue. The third production region is Madagascar. Tsavorites from this region are generally also a little dark and larger in size and look similar to the samples from the Tsavo region in Tanzania.

SOME IDEAS FOR EMERALD JEWELRY

TSAVORITE VS EMERALD: COLORS AND VARIETIES

Emerald

Emerald has shades from yellow-green to blue-green. The color is divided into hue, tonality, and saturation. The most valuable is, of course, the pure green hue. Light colored emeralds are usually known as green beryl.

Of course, emeralds from different mines and countries may also have different colors. Emeralds from Colombia have a pure saturated green color, and from Zambia have a bluish green color.

It is worth saying that in ancient times, many gemstones were called emeralds only because they were green. Nowadays, there are six types of gemstones, which are considered to be varieties of emerald.

Tsavorite

The color of a stone may vary from dark green to bright green with a yellowish or grayish tint. Most tsavorites are dark colored, so bright specimens are the most valued. The green color of this stone is due to its content of chrome and vanadium. There are also grossular garnets, which can have a green color as well, but these are colored with iron. They are not tsavorites and are of lesser value.

TSAVORITE VS EMERALD: VALUE

Tsavorite

In addition to the fact that emerald has long been valued for its properties and beauty, it is also a precious gem and stands alongside diamond, sapphire, and ruby, so the cost of an emerald is high! It is so valuable that for a carat, a beautiful emerald specimen can be even two or three times more expensive than a diamond.

The most valued emeralds are the emeralds that have luster and transparency, as well as the beautiful green color. In high quality emeralds, the color is evenly distributed throughout the gemstone.

Emerald

Amazing brilliance and a rich palette of shades brought Tsavorite popularity and made it quite valuable. High-quality tsavorite stones of more than two carats are rarer than emeralds, and as a rule, tsavorite costs only one tenth of the price of an emerald.

Since the tsavorite is not well known, the demand for this stone is not as high as, say, emerald, which is one of the reasons why it is much cheaper. The gemstone is in greater demand among collectors and connoisseurs than the general public. The tsavorites are among the most expensive of all garnets.
