Twig Ring Set with an 8 mm Rainbow Moonstone and a Rose in Solid 14K Gold

Twigs, leaves and buds in silver, a moonstone held among them, and beside it a rose in solid gold. Cleo is built like a piece of a garden rather than a setting with decoration added to it.

Cleo is a twig engagement ring set in oxidized 925 sterling silver: an 8mm rainbow moonstone held among silver twigs, with a rose cast in solid 14K gold sitting beside the stone, and a matching band.

The gold rose

The rose sits beside the stone, cast separately in solid 14K gold and joined to the silver by hand. Not plated, and not a gold-colored alloy — the same gold we use in our solid gold rings, which is why it keeps its color. This makes Cleo a two tone ring in the strict sense: silver and solid gold, with no plating anywhere on it.

One gold flower among silver leaves reads the way a single bloom shows up in a hedge — you see it before you see anything else on the ring.

The twig setting

The stone is held in textured silver worked as twigs rather than in a plain bezel, and the branch forms continue into the band. The oxidation is worked into the recesses of the texture and the piece is then polished, so the dark stays down in the bark and between the leaves while the raised silver comes back bright.

The stone

8 mm across — about a third of an inch, and enough surface for the labradorescence to travel as a single sweep rather than a glint. Rainbow moonstone is white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, rather than the orthoclase of classic moonstone. Mohs 6 to 6.5, and one of the birthstones for June. Natural inclusions are part of the material, and no two stones are alike.

The second ring

The matching band, Mio, is 3 mm and carries the same work as the stone ring: small leaves, buds and vines over a textured surface. It stacks under Cleo, and it holds up on its own as a ring rather than as a filler band.

How it is made

Both rings begin as hand-sculpted wax models in our own workshop and are cast and finished by hand. Every piece carries a lifetime warranty.

The set gets chosen as a woodland wedding set, for proposals, and fairly often for no occasion at all.

ABOUT MOONSTONE

Frequently asked questions

Is the gold rose solid gold or plated?

Solid 14K gold. It is cast separately in gold and joined to the silver by hand, so there is no plating to wear off and the colour does not change with wear.

Can the second ring be worn on its own?

Yes. The Mio band is 3 mm and carries the same leaves, buds and vines as the stone ring, in the same silver and the same finish, so it works alone on any finger as well as stacked under Cleo.

How does an 8 mm moonstone compare to a 6 mm one?

Eight millimeters is noticeably larger on the hand, and more surface means the labradorescence travels further - the blue reads as a single sweep rather than a point of light. It also sits higher, which is worth knowing if you work with your hands.

Is rainbow moonstone real moonstone?

Not in the strict gemological sense. Rainbow moonstone is a trade name for white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar. Classic moonstone is orthoclase, a potassium feldspar. Both belong to the feldspar family and both are sold as moonstone, but they are distinct minerals.

What causes the blue flash in rainbow moonstone?

The effect is called labradorescence. Light scatters between microscopic layers within the crystal, producing a sheen that appears to float beneath the surface and shifts as the stone moves. It is related to but distinct from adularescence, the softer glow seen in classic orthoclase moonstone.

Is moonstone durable enough for everyday wear?

Labradorite, including rainbow moonstone, rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. That makes it suitable for regular wear but softer than quartz, sapphire or diamond. It should be protected from hard impacts and removed before manual work, gym sessions or swimming.

Does a two tone ring need special care?

No special routine. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush suit both metals. Keep silver polish off the gold, and do not scrub the oxidized recesses - that is where the darkened finish sits.

What does oxidized sterling silver mean?

Oxidation is a chemical surface treatment that darkens silver. The rings are oxidized and then polished, so the darkening stays in the recesses of the texture while the raised surfaces come back bright. It is not a plating and will not flake off.

It's beautiful! I love it! It arrived right when it said would. Moonstone is my birth month stone as well as my husband's. We also got married in June so the moonstone means a lot to me. Thank you!
