Solid 14K Gold Triple Goddess Ring — Rainbow Moonstone on a Branch-Textured Band

Soma is a triple moon engagement ring in solid 14K gold, set with an 8×4 mm marquise rainbow moonstone. The stone stands as the full moon with a gold crescent to either side of it, and the band beneath is botanical: bark texture, small sculpted leaves, branches running into the shoulders of the ring.

Solid 14K gold, in three colors

Yellow reads warmest against the blue flash in the stone. Rose softens it. White gold keeps the contrast coolest and leaves the moonstone as the only color on the hand.

Solid gold, not plated. Plating is a thin surface layer that wears off with daily wear, sometimes quickly, and then has to be redone. On solid gold there is no layer to wear through. 14K is harder than the higher karats as well, so it holds a polish and resists scratching, which makes it practical for a ring worn every day.

The band

The bark texture and the small leaves are sculpted, not stamped. They run into the shoulders on both sides, so the branch carries on around the band instead of stopping where the crescents begin.

Most celestial engagement rings are plain metal around a stone. Putting the moon phases on a branch returns the symbol to where it started: the lunar calendar and the growing year were one and the same thing.

The stone

Rainbow moonstone is a trade name. The mineral underneath it is white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar, a relative of classic moonstone rather than the same stone, since classic moonstone is orthoclase. The flash is labradorescence: light interrupted between internal growth planes, which is why it appears to sit below the surface, why blue dominates, and why it only shows when the hand moves.

Cut as a marquise cabochon, a pointed oval with a smooth domed top instead of facets. The dome keeps the flash as one travelling sheen; facets would break it into separate points of light.

Labradorite rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than the gold holding it, so the metal takes the knocks and the stone sits set back between the two crescents. Moonstone is also a June birthstone, alongside pearl and alexandrite.

The symbol

Waxing crescent, full moon, waning crescent: the triple goddess symbol, read in Wiccan and neopagan practice as Maiden, Mother and Crone, and more broadly as beginning, fullness and knowing. It is among the oldest feminine symbols still in use, and older than most of the traditions that adopted it.

In gold it works as an engagement ring, a wedding ring worn alone, an anniversary piece, or something bought for no occasion at all.

How it is made

Soma starts as a hand-sculpted wax model in our own workshop. The crescents, the leaves and the band are sculpted together as a single form, then cast in solid 14K gold and finished by hand. Every piece carries a lifetime warranty.

What does a triple moon ring symbolize?

The triple moon represents the three phases of the lunar cycle — waxing, full and waning. In Wiccan and neopagan tradition these correspond to Maiden, Mother and Crone: the three stages of a woman's life, and by extension beginning, fullness and wisdom.

Is this solid gold or gold plated?

Solid 14K gold throughout — not plated, not gold filled, not vermeil. 14K gold is 58.3% pure gold alloyed with other metals for strength. Solid gold does not wear through at the contact points, never needs replating, and keeps its material value.

Which gold colour should I choose?

All three are solid 14K and the same price, so it comes down to tone. Yellow gold is the traditional choice and sits warmest against the blue flash of the moonstone. Rose gold is alloyed with more copper, which makes it slightly harder and warmer still. White gold is cooler and makes the stone's blue read more strongly. You choose at checkout and the ring is made to order in that metal.

Is rainbow moonstone real moonstone?

Not in the strict gemological sense. Rainbow moonstone is a trade name for white labradorite, a plagioclase feldspar. Classic moonstone is orthoclase, a potassium feldspar. Both belong to the feldspar family and both are sold as moonstone, but they are distinct minerals.

What causes the blue flash in rainbow moonstone?

The effect is called labradorescence. Light scatters between microscopic layers within the crystal, producing a sheen that appears to float beneath the surface and shifts as the stone moves. It is related to but distinct from adularescence, the softer glow seen in classic orthoclase moonstone.

Is moonstone durable enough for everyday wear?

Labradorite, including rainbow moonstone, rates 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. That makes it suitable for regular wear but softer than quartz, sapphire or diamond. The gold will outlast the stone, so protect the ring from hard impacts and take it off before manual work, gym sessions or swimming.

Is moonstone a birthstone?

Yes. Moonstone is one of the three birthstones for June, along with pearl and alexandrite. Rainbow moonstone is worn as a June birthstone throughout the jewellery trade.

How do you care for a gold moonstone ring?

Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam and household chemicals — the gold tolerates them but the stone does not. Store the ring separately from harder stones to prevent scratching, and remove it before swimming, cleaning or heavy lifting.
